12 LIFE CRITICAL ACTIVITIES
Employees’ health and safety is a core value for Seb Engineering Services. Seb Engineering Services commits to zero incidents and believes that all incidents are preventable. Accordingly, Seb Engineering Services has identified 12 Life Critical Activities which can cause serious harm to its employees and requirements regarding these activities. These requirements apply to all personnel present across all projects and operations.
Life Critical Activities shall be considered with great importance in all phases of a work activity and requirements shall be complied with at a 100% rate. Compliance with Life Critical Requirements is a condition of employment on any Seb Engineering Services project or work activity being carried out.
- Prioritize activities to ensure the implementation of safe systems of work.
- Ensure that required precautionary measures are put in place in order to manage dangerous intersections or unidentified risks which may arise afterwards.
- Never work at height without fall protection.
- Use and install fall arrest systems in compliance with manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations.
- Provide sufficient training, instruction, supervision and maintenance.
- Permit only certified scaffold builders to modify, erect and dismantle scaffolding platforms.
- Secure hand tools and remove all loose materials from edges to prevent falling object hazard.
- Operate Elevated Work Platforms only in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Never operate an elevated work platform if you are not authorized to do so.
- Consider applying safe driving practices as your responsibility.
- Never drive or work under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
- Never exceed speed limits in the field and outside.
- Prevent personnel from falling through unprotected openings such as grating holes, shafts, manholes etc.
- Obtain PTW (Permit to Work) to open and close such openings in a controlled manner under the supervision of responsible persons.
- Cover openings and/or install guardrails in the surrounding area.
- Prior to starting any excavation, always obtain PTW (Permit to Work).
- Ensure that buried services are identified and marked on the drawings attached to the PTW.
- Excavation and trenches shall be sloped, benched or supported with manufactured shoring systems based on soil classifications.
- Never remove guards of machinery and hand tools.
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations without making any unauthorized modifications.
- Provide adequate maintenance.
- Never initiate any work in areas defined as confined space without relevant training and authorization.
- Obtain PTW.
- Test the atmosphere.
- Assign watcher and provide effective communication methods with entrants.
- Provide continuous supervision.
- Develop a rescue plan and ensure it is operational.
- Obey all warning signs, barricades and other safety warnings.
- Do not remove or override any existing guards and/or barricades without authorization.
- Ensure that all energy sources are properly isolated prior to commencement of work.
- Obtain PTW, follow LOTO procedure, and conduct STARRT to complete the task safely.
- Do not remove and / or tamper with locks and tags if you are not authorized.
- Eliminate all residual / stored energy prior to work.
- Never stand underneath a suspended load.
- Consider all lifting operations critical if and when a personnel is lifted.
- Permit only authorized persons to carry out lifting operations in compliance with the issued PTW.
- Take ground conditions, adjacent structures and simultaneous activities into account at all times.
- Use lifting accessories and appliances as per related standards and manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Never use equipment such as scaffolding material, pipes or objects with sharp edges for lifting and rigging operations.
